Faculty Senate
As stated in the Faculty Senate Constitution, the College Faculty Senate is established to:
1. Help faculty contribute skills, insights, and creativity which will produce a rich learning environment for students, faculty, and patrons of the college.
2. Support faculty in working for an organizational structure that will encourage the use of faculty talents, knowledge, and problem-solving skills.
3. Provide a forum where the diverse voices of faculty may be heard, where ideas can be shared and debated, where solutions to problems can be found, and where recommendations regarding academic issues can be made to the College President for consideration and response.
I am grateful for the three years I spent as a Faculty Senator. In this time I have learned about many of the issues affecting faculty and the College in general. I have been amazed at the amount of time and energy my colleagues have put into their various committee and Senate obligations, this is especially true of Faculty Senate Leadership where I served for my last two years on Senate.
In my first year on Senate I was a member of the Constitutional Review, Apportionment, and Organization Committee (CRAO). I thought this was a useful committee to be part of since I was new to Senate and needed to learn about the various rules and bylaws and overall functioning of the body. At the end of my first year I assisted CRAO in completing a project comparing our Senate to other colleges and universities in Utah.
In my second year I was elected Chair of the Adjunct Faculty Impact Committee (AFI) and was re-elected Chair the following year. This experience was the most rewarding of my time on Senate. I was directly involved in important issues relating to our sizable adjunct population, issues which had become more complex since the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. Our efforts as a committee were focused on three areas: 1. Ensuring adjuncts are informed regarding policy 2. Securing resources for adjuncts, including office space, and 3. Providing opportunities for adjuncts to feel connected to the College. An important part of achieving this third goal was through our partnership with the Professional Development Center where we were responsible for organizing and facilitating two major events for adjunct faculty, namely the Adjunct Faculty Conference and Collegial Conversations; the former held in the fall and the latter in the spring. Certainly it is no easy task to document all of the activities and efforts of this committee, but the links below will hopefully provide some idea of our work.
